For The People September 11, 2001

Home

This stark and powerfully moving design was created by Cecilia Benoit to memorialize the individuals who perished as a result of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.  Although many printed images of flags, the Statue of Liberty, the Twin Towers, and other poignant symbols have been created, Cecilia wished to focus attention on the heart of the tragedy - the individual lives lost.

The design is done in black and white to emphasize the somber theme.  The Twin Towers appear simply as buildings until the viewer approaches closely - then views thousands of names.  "Overwhelming" is the emotion described by a viewer.  "The enormity of the loss becomes real...I was immediately brought to tears," stated another. During the Super Bowl XXXVI half time, Paul McCartney’s comments on seeing the victims’ names displayed was “All those names…all those people”. Seeing the names is a poignant reminder that so many lives were lost.

Names of the victims were placed in the tower in which they worked or may have been when the tragedy occurred.  Those aboard American Airlines Flight 11, which crashed into the North Tower, are included in that tower.  Victims aboard the other three doomed flights as well as those at the Pentagon are listed on the South Tower.  Firefighters, police, and rescue personnel who perished are listed in the drawing of the Marriott World Trade Center.
